Papiri Abductees Freed: Final Group En Route to Minna

School Abduction Victims Freed in Niger State, En Route to Safety

The remaining pupils and staff who were tragically abducted from St. Mary’s Catholic private primary and secondary school in Papiri, Agwarra Local Government Area of Niger State, have reportedly been released. Sources indicate that the freed individuals are currently en route to Minna, the state capital.

The audacious attack, which saw over 300 students and staff members taken captive, unfolded when a large group of heavily armed assailants invaded the school. Reports suggest the attackers operated for several hours with little to no immediate resistance.

While the precise number of students and staff in this final released group remains unconfirmed at the time of this report, there are indications that some students may have been separated from the main contingent due to the arduous journey. The exact circumstances surrounding their ordeal and the duration of their captivity are still being pieced together.

Confirmation of the release came late Sunday night through a statement issued by Most Rev. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, who also serves as the proprietor of the affected school.

The statement, signed by Dan Atori, Media Aide to the CAN Chairman, revealed that Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago personally contacted Bishop Yohanna with the uplifting news.

“The Governor called the CAN chairman few minutes ago to confirm the release of the children and the teachers,” the statement read, conveying the relief felt by religious and state authorities.

While the exact figures of those released were not immediately disclosed, the statement indicated that the group is expected to arrive in Minna on Monday. It is anticipated that Governor Bago himself will personally receive the freed students and staff at the Government House, marking a significant moment of reconciliation and support for the victims and their families.

The incident has cast a somber shadow over the region, highlighting ongoing security challenges. The swiftness of the release, however, offers a glimmer of hope and underscores the collaborative efforts between religious leaders and government officials in resolving such crises. Further details regarding the aftermath of the abduction, including any potential security measures or investigations, are expected to emerge as the situation develops. The focus remains on the safe arrival and well-being of all those who endured this traumatic experience.
